Training costs

Build a budgetthat reflects the whole journey.

The hourly aircraft rate is only one part of the cost of earning a private pilot certificate. Here is how to compare an estimate with clearly separated aircraft, instruction, and other expenses.

PLAN YOUR FLIGHT TRAINING

Ask for an itemized estimate

Skyview’s supplied rate sheet lists hourly aircraft and instructor charges. Explore the rates and budget planner, then request a current plan that reflects your experience and how time is billed. A written estimate helps you see what is included and what is separate.

  • Aircraft time, with fuel inclusion and billing method explained
  • Flight instruction and preflight or postflight briefings
  • Ground instruction and learning materials
  • Medical examination and required application processes
  • Knowledge test and practical test fees
  • Extra training or scheduling contingencies

Minimum hours are not a cost guarantee

The standard Part 61 airplane private pilot requirement begins at 40 flight hours with specified experience components. Training continues until you meet both experience requirements and the proficiency needed for testing.

Skyview’s site mentions 50–60 hours, while the FAA’s school-selection guidance says many students need 60–75. Neither figure guarantees your outcome. Your preparation, consistency, and learning pace matter.

Compare like with like

A lower aircraft rate may exclude fuel or instruction included in another estimate. Ask whether instructor time is billed only during flight or also for ground briefings. Check whether taxes, equipment, and test fees are included.

Use the same set of assumptions when comparing schools. Ask how the estimate would change if you need more flight or ground lessons.

Treat published simulator rates separately

Skyview’s simulator section lists $85 per hour for the device and $50 per hour for a certified instructor. Confirm whether both apply and how the session is billed. These figures do not establish airplane training rates or a private pilot total.

Review the plan as you learn

Keep track of actual spending and progress. Periodic conversations with your instructor can help you understand the next phase and update your budget. Do not rush a skill simply to match an early cost estimate.
